When they were young Ferdinand and Oscar were teasing a sheep buck and ran into the house to
get away from him. The sheep buck ran right through the kitchen door. Eddie and Ferdinand had trained a billy goat to pull a sled to haul wood in the winter. I was born and raised in Maplewood Township. I was baptized by E J Ouri. When I was eleven years old, my father died, so I had to farm and help my mother. At age sixteen (1918) I was hauling water by Rothsay. In 1919 I worked for Sophus Anderson as a farm laborer, then for Olaf Alsta (1920), in 1921 I did farm work for Carl Osman and then in 1922 for Lars Trosvig. From 1923-1927 I worked for John Peterson at Page, ND. I slept at night under bundle wagons with just a blanket. I bought meals from a cooking car/wagon. In 1928 Harry and I rented a farm from Carly Johnson. We farmed together until Harry's illness and then I farmed with Eddie. Helped build a road through Devils Lake one summer. On June 28, 1929 Alma Gustafson and I were marrid. We had our honeymoon in the Black Hills of South Dakota. When we returned, we slept in the new house which was built to replace the old log home. |
