Memories of Millichamps and Tuomey's by Pam Sibley April 2,2001 When I was about 6 or 7 (late 1940's) my parents drove to a gas convention in Seattle in the summer. They took my sister, Cherie and me with them. We stayed with the Millichamps and Tuoney's who owned a piece of land on the outskirts of Edmunds, WA, two homes one at each end. In he Tuomey home I recall daughter Madeleine and wife Emilie standing behind Tom seated in a chair. They were laughing at his jokes. He was telling them with a straight face. That is the only memory I have of Tom Tuomey. Madeleine had a business career and came to California to visit a few times. She was very friendly, I never knew she had a brother Bernard until I started this genealogy. I didn't listen enough during family visits. The Millichamps, Stanley and Harriet had dog kennels, St Bernard and Cocker Spaniels and lots of peacocks. They took us to their antique/furniture store and daughter Jennette took us to the beach one day on Paget Sound. I remember Stanley as very fun loving, I am told he was very ambitious, a self made millionaire, lost it all and made it back again. He and Harriet traveled a great deal collecting antiques. At one time they had a farm in Yakima, WA and raised produce. After Stanley died at a relatively young age. Harriet lived in another home in the forest with beautiful gardens, also in Edmunds. I never saw it but my parents and aunts an uncles did. Harriet was Nurse in San Francisco before she married Stanley. Her real name Henriette but she hated it so everybody knew here as Harriet. To me she seemed the most educated, work and realistic of all the Moll sisters. One of her granddaughters became pregnant and after the baby was born was murdered by the Father of the child. Harriet was very down to earth in telling us the story. Another of her grandchildren raised the baby. She was my dad's favorite aunt and came down to visit every few years. Jeannette married a building contractor who moved around a lot. at one time they lived outside of Ukiah, CA where my Mom came from and where my parents bought a ranch and moved when they retired. I saw Jeannette once during that time, haven't seen her since. She and family moved to So Calif, I think to the desert because when Harriet became too old to live alone , Jeannette moved her to a nursing home in Yucca Valley. I assume that was near their home. That is where Harriet passed away at age of 104. On that same trip in the 1940's we stopped in Yelm, Wa on the way home to visit Harriet & Emilie's sister Florine and family, the Bradley, who also had a farm. I only remember Kenneth taking me to collect the eggs in the chicken coup. I don't remember the father Don Bradley at all, but when Florine and Kenneth moved back to Santa Rosa I saw the two of them frequently. More about them another time. |
