Notes for Norma Agnes Garrison

General Note
Stories told by Norma (Garrison) Nygard on July 6, 1993

We ask Norma to tell us some stories about how she met Vernon, about Grandma & Grandpa Garrison as she was their first grandchild and we thought she would have known them better then anyone else.

She ask what we wanted to know the good or bad. The one thing she felt grandma should have done different, when Uncle Ralph lost his wife, Norma’s mother, she felt Grandma should have stayed and helped out for a while till they got adjusted without a wife & mother.

When Norma & Vernon were married and living in Ribbing, grandma come with a wedding

present for them, which contained several jars of dry food, such as flour, beans, etc that she and Aunt Addie got from commodities. They were receiving these as aunt Addie & Grandma lived together when Aunt Addie was separated from Austin and after the divorce. Norma felt real happy when grandma brought these things, as this meant so much that grandma thought to do this, but also as they were very hard up at the time. She also told of a story that when grandma come to visit her she left $5.00 in an envelope on the table and Norma still has the $5.00 as of 7/1993.

Norma & Vernon had a very good marriage. She was ask how they met and she said they had known each other for some time as Aunt Esther was married to his brother Robert. One

weekend they were all in Hibbing visiting and this was where he had found a job and was

working. I believe she said he was staying with family and giving them all rides to where they

needed to go. He had gone to bed and was asleep-she went to wake him and as she put it they began spooning and he ask her to marry him, so at this time they become engaged.

Grandma had a very hard life, as grandpa drank quite alot and they had a large family, also they traveled alot before they settled in Minnesota. They lived on a farm near Lawndale when

grandpa died, later she moved into Barnesville , then living with Addie other then visits to her

other children until she passed away. It is said she had a very hard time her last years, as Aunt Addle’s new husband didn’t care for her and didn’t treat her well.
