Six children: Alfred, Wilhelmina, Edna, Dorothy, Eleanor and Harold. I haven't gotten farther down the line to grandchildren of the siblings to my grandfather yet and hopefully those listed above are all correct. I looked at your data and there are still alot of Herting relatives out there. Until recently, I didn't know my grandfather had several siblings and had no idea there were Herting families remaining in the Pelican Rapids-Fergus Falls area. As a child one of my mothers cousins, possibly a Ruth, came to visit us at a park in Sidney, Montana, she was from the Fergus Falls area. They kept in touch thru the mail for many years, but I was little and don't remember much about her. In the 1950's my Uncle John Herting took his wife, Alma to Fergus Falls for surgery, I assume they stayed with members of the family. Its great to connect with someone from the same lineage and really appreciate your willingness to share information. He did not know very much about it his grandfathers family, but he did remember one thing I thought was interesting. He said that his grandfather Charles (for whom he is named) had a sister who used to visit him. He can't remember her name. But Grandfather Charles always used to take his sister into the bedroom to talk to her, because she only spoke German--no English, and Charles did not want the children hearing German. That must have been during the WWII war, is my guess. Apparently you did not know about the sister. I asked Dad if he was certain it was a sister, and not a sister-in-law, and he is absolutely certain it was a sister. A mystery. Cheers, doug From: Alice Whitmer To: doug brown Sent: Sat, January 9, 2010 5:36:21 PM Subject: Re: herting family history Doug, Thanks for getting back to me. My mother was Thelma Herting, daughter of Frederick Herting, who is the son of Henry A. Herting and a brother to Charles Herting. They all came from Germany, I have the town, but would need to look it up. My grandfather lived among other Hertings in the Pelican Rapids, Fergus Falls area of MN. He later moved with his family to Montana to homestead in 1916. My mother was 2nd youngest of 7 children, John, Tina, Anna, Esther, Floyd, Thelma and LaVerna. My mother was married twice and I am from the second family and am 20 years younger than the older ones. My siblings are Elise, Leone, Richard (deceased), Bartel and myself, Alice. My husband, Boone, and I have a wheat ranch in NE Montana near my grandfather Hertings' homestead. We also operate a Bed & Breakfast, The Meadowlark Guest House, you can look us up on visitmt.com under Missouri River Country of Montana, city of Wolf Point. Fred Herting also had a brother named Carl. Great to hear from you, and I'd be glad to share my info on the family with you. I'm compiling right now and will send it if you would like in a few weeks when I have it completed. Sincerely, Alice Whitmer On Fri, Jan 8, 2010 at 7:36 AM, doug brown Hi Alice- Nice to make your acquaintance. Your name doesn't appear in my database, so I don't know about your connection to the Hertings. It is a bit of a stretch to say I have done "research" on the family--mostly I have compiled the work done by others, mostly my mother, into a database. Everything I have (aside from a few edits that I have not gotten around to) is published on my family tree web page. (http://dcbrown.org/f_tree_html/index01.html). These data can also be downloaded in GEDCOM format at: http://dcbrown.org/gedcom.zip As to the Hertings, I have very little information about my Grandmother Pearl's ancestors. I have her father listed as Charles, but have no data about him, nor do I even have her mother's name. I have printed out all of the information I have about the Herting descendants in the attached pdf file. It is correct except for the marriage of Ben Brown, David's son, which just took place Dec. 27, 2009. I need to get that in. I hope this is useful. If you have any further information, I would certainly be interested in getting it into the database.
